WE ARE A SMALL FARMSTEAD DAIRY USING ORGANIC PRACTICES

Early spring is a very busy time for us between kidding and getting our milkers ready for the season. We spend many hours with our babies and handle them a lot and each one is given a name. We make a list of all the moms, date they kidded and their babies’ names. Last season got a little crazy with giving them names since we had so many triplets. We have to get very creative and call in the troops for name ideas!
Our herd is made up of the Saanen breed, a large goat originally from Switzerland. They get milked twice a day, 7 days a week April thru December, January thru the end of February they are resting for next kidding season. After kidding we keep them with their babies’ for 2 weeks, and then bottle feed for another 6 weeks.
Our goats are fed a diet of local certified organic hay and local organic grains. Their diet includes organic kelp, trace minerals, and baking soda free choice, to help buffer their rumen and boost their energy level naturally. We do not use any pesticides anywhere at Cheval Farmstead, including our pastures, being as natural as possible is our philosophy. Happy goats make delicious milk for great tasting cheese!
